Sheep’s Head Producers' Market
By shopping with us you can be sure that what you buy is grown, produced or made by people who live and work within the Sheep’s Head community.
The concept of shopping locally not only saves on personal transport costs by cutting out the miles to the larger towns but also provides a vital economic input to the area.
Choosing to buy from the Sheep's Head Producers Market and Shop gives support to local enterprise and encourages a more vibrant local economy. Buying locally increases potential for further small scale business ventures which in turn provide additional employment opportunities where there has previously been very few.
As a producers' group we intend to follow the principles of a co-operative in the future, as the project develops and currently we operate as a “not for profit” group. By sharing the cost of overheads and supporting each other we can make even the smallest of business ventures possible.
The aim of the local market is to provide several key amenities:
The Sheep’s head “brand” can be accredited to these products as a sign of authenticity and quality.
The Sheep’s Head Producers Market is part of a larger plan for the area to address the need for a more vibrant local economy and provide resilience against the more widespread challenges currently affecting all of us.
Among the other many benefits the produce market is intended to encourage residents and visitors to spend within the community which gives support to local enterprise and keeps money within the locality.
Who are we?
Inspired after attending a community course which brought into focus the need to become more resilient as a rural community by creating local sustainable employment, a small group of Sheep’s Head residents began to meet regularly during the winter of 2010/11.
Members of the original group were joined by others, who had an interest in developing local resources to provide opportunities in the area.
The enthusiasm for a weekly produce market grew out of this and in June 2011 we held our first event. The Sunday market continued through that summer until late September.
In the early weeks of the second season in 2012 the possibility of opening up a shop during the week became a reality. We now have a community run Market Shop in the Old Creamery building.
In 2014 a new development was completed at the Old Creamery, this small area now includes 'The Old Creamery Cafe' with riverside decking & outdoor seating areas for alfresco dining with an evening Bistro and a purpose built shop for the SHPM to allow the group to go from Strength to Strength with many choices of display areas along with a window display.
We would also like to use this opportunity to thank the O'Donovan family for showing such great support & belief in our project
